The Yorkshire Junior Cricket Festival kicked off this week. The first match on Mon August 8th pitted our best local youngsters against a strong Bradford U15 team at Armitage Bridge.
Batting first, Huddersfield reached a well-earned 186-8 in 45 overs. Huddersfield captain Tom Addy (Almondbury Wes) led his side well by opening the batting. He fall just short of an excellent half-century, caught by Nazir on 48. There were solid contributions throughout the batting order as good stand followed each good stand. Fellow opening batsman Josh Megson (Skelmanthorpe) added 22 runs whilst Musa Ahmed (Hall Bower) batting at 5 pitched in with 23 before being caught.
In reply, Bradford fell into trouble early on losing opener Subbhan Ammar in the second over to Samad Hussain. A positive second wicket partnership of 60 looked to challenge the Huddersfield total but the loss of five wickets for only 15 runs decimated the Bradford middle order. Musa Ahmed starred with the ball to finish with outstandingly tidy figures of 2-17 from 9 overs. Equally as miserly with the ball was Thongsbridge's Will Reeves supporting strongly with 2-19 from 9 overs. Bradford managed to play out their full 45 over allocation but it was Huddersfield's day as they ultimately fell 10 runs short.
On Thursday 11th, Huddersfield faced Sheffield U15's in the semi-final. Again, batting first Huddersfield put up a challenging score of 201-5 in 40 overs. Talented all-rounder Musa Ahmed was once again in the runs with 74. His fellow Hall Bower team-mate Tom Baxter (56) offered great support with a half-century. However Sheffield's reply wilted under a powerful bowling performance finishing 35 all out as they were simply blown away. Will Reeves (3-10) and Birkby Rose Hill's Samad Hussain (3-12) the chief antagonists as Huddersfield romped to a huge 166 run victory to book their place in the final.
Their final opponents (either Scarborough or Barnsley) lie in wait with the match to be played at Sowerby St Peters CC at 11:30am on Friday 12th August.
