The weather had the final say on the last weekend, with rain washing out a number of matches — but there was still plenty to play for and celebrate across the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League. From champions and promotions to relegations, cup glory and remarkable individual performances, 2026 delivered storylines right across the League. So, as the pads are put away and the covers finally rolled off, we’ve picked out some of the clubs and achievements that made 2026 a season to remember.   Premiership – Hoylandswaine Rule the Roost HOYLANDSWAINE have once again ruled the Huddersfield Premier League roost, retaining their Premiership and Conference division crowns after another outstanding campaign. Led mostly by Captain Ben Kohler Cadmore, and ably assisted by Captain Chris Holliday and Arron Lilley, Swaine 1st XI remained undefeated in the league and take the Byrom Shield. The title is their ninth Premiership triumph in the last 14 years and their seventh in the last nine seasons - an extraordinary level of consistency at the top of the Huddersfield game. And this year they completed another famous league and cup double, adding the Sykes Cup to the Byrom Shield after beating Rastrick in the final at Honley in August. That makes it three doubles in the same 14 year period, following previous league-and-cup triumphs in 2014 and 2019. Three players scored over 1000 runs in all competitions, Furqan Shafiq with over 1300, Abid Ali who has an average of almost 64, and England’s Samit Patel, who can also add almost 70 wickets to his overall performances to make him one of the League’s leading all round players. Max Morley and Adam Sylvester also have taken more than 50 wickets apiece. The Sykes Cup has also become familiar territory for the Swaine, with this year's success their fifth triumph in the competition during that 14-year spell. In short, Hoylandswaine continue to set the standard. Last season's promoted sides Mirfield Parish Cavaliers and Armitage Bridge found life back in the Championship tough. Both were relegated with Armitage Bridge managing just three victories and finishing with 31 points, while Parish ended on 36. There was at least some consolation for both clubs – neither picked up a penalty point during the season.   CHAMPIONSHIP - BARKISLAND BOUNCE STRAIGHT BACK Barkisland, meanwhile, bounce straight back to the Premiership after being relegated last season, securing their return to the topflight and take the Ballcraft Trophy. Thongsbridge, who also dropped down last year, came agonisingly close to joining them, but were just pipped by Marsden who got over the line in a very tight finish, by one wicket in a low scoring game. At the bottom, Hall Bower and Meltham suffered relegation to the Conference. Hall Bower finished on 29 points, while Meltham ended on 28 with their six penalty points ultimately proving costly in the battle for survival.   CONFERENCE - SWAINE SECOND XI TOP THE CONFERENCE There was another title heading to Hoylandswaine as their 2nd XI were crowned Conference champions after collecting an impressive 124 points and take the Hinchcliffe Cup. This leaves Linthwaite and Holmfirth in the promotion slots. At the wrong end of the table, Skelmanthorpe 2nd XI and Mirfield CC were relegated, with Thurstonland surviving after a big two wicket win against Denby Dale. It was a particularly difficult campaign for Mirfield, who managed just two victories all season.   And so another Huddersfield Premier League campaign comes to a close – with Hoylandswaine once again sitting proudly at the summit, while the battle for promotion and survival has reshaped the divisions below. One thing, however, remains unchanged: the Swaine are still the team everyone has to beat. Flockton, who were promoted from Alliance 3 as champions in 2024, followed that with promotion from Alliance 2 as runners-up last year, and have now gone one better by taking the Alliance title at the first attempt. Leading batsman Junaid Anwar made over 800 runs at an average of over 55, including a top score of 202 in a game back in June where the team scored more than 400. Muhammad Zubair, Farrukh Sultan and Aditya Chaskar all contributed with around 500 runs each. Three seasons. Alongside Flockton Kirkburton’s 2nd XI ended their season on 106 points and secured promotion with a 5 wicket win at home to Clayton West 1st XI. Almondbury 1st XI join Linthwaite 2nd XI  who are being relegated back down to Alliance 2 after just one season with only one win and 19 points.   Alliance 2 – Shepley Take the Title Shepley 2nd XI win the Lexus Print Trophy and are joined by Mirfield Parish Cavaliers as they move up to the Alliance. Edgerton & Dalton and Broad Oak 2nd XI drop to Alliance 3 in a closely fought end to the season with only 3 points separating the bottom 3.   Alliance 3 – Marsden Win Marsden 2nd XI went one position better than their first team by taking top spot with 109 points in a closely fought battle with Birkby Rose Hill and Lascelles Hall where there was only 7 points between the 3 teams. This makes a double celebration for Marsden with both 1st XI and 2nd XI securing promotion. Club Chair Norman Clee commented “It’s a fantastic achievement for the club. At the other end, Denby Dale 2nd XI return to Alliance 4. Meltham 2nd XI, who came bottom, join them in Alliance 4.   Alliance 4 – Flockton Double Up Led by Captain Atif Sultan, Flockton 2nd XI win the Goulder Trophy, ending 6 points ahead of Cartworth Moor who were still in the running until their game against Holmbridge was called off. His support, enthusiasm and love of the game will be fondly remembered by many across the cricketing community. In an era when proper club teas have all but disappeared, Holmbridge CC stubbornly kept the tradition alive and for the past 16 years, three ladies have been at the heart of it. Fran Hazelwood-Mosby, Sarah Gledhill and Emma Holt are hanging up their aprons after 16 seasons of serving up something increasingly rare in club cricket — a proper knife-and-fork cricket tea. Most clubs gave up on the traditional tea years ago. Not at the Bridge. Every Saturday, whatever the weather, whatever the scoreline Fran, Sarah and Emma made sure the players sat down to a proper tea. Everyone at Holmbridge CC and the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Fran, Sarah and Emma for 16 years of dedication, hard work and, quite simply, amazing teas. The 1st XI have been crowned Huddersfield Premier League Premiership champions, retaining their place at the summit of local club cricket and lifting the Byrom Shield for the ninth time. And what a campaign it has been. Going into the final stages of the season, Hoylandswaine had won 19 of their 21 league matches, with the other two abandoned, and had amassed an impressive 117 points. Led by Ben Kohler-Cadmore, the Swain have combined experienced campaigners with quality additions to produce a side that has proved virtually unstoppable throughout the summer. The league title adds to an already impressive collection of silverware, with Hoylandswaine also lifting the Sykes Cup this season. And the success doesn't stop with the 1st XI. The 2nd XI have produced some outstanding performances of their own, none more memorable than their Paddock Shield final victory over Skelmanthorpe in August. Remarkably, it meant the club were celebrating two pieces of silverware on the same day, with the 1st XI lifting the Sykes Cup while the 2nd XI were crowned Paddock Shield winners. It has been some season at Haigh Lane. Hoylandswaine have been able to call on players capable of performing at the very highest level, with Pakistan Test star Abid Ali joining the club for 2026 alongside former England international Samit Patel, county seam bowler Tom Bailey and county player Adam Sylvester. Richmondshire CC 147-9 (30 overs) Shafiqullah Ghafari 5-37 Hoylandswaine 168 all out (28. Adam Sylvester 4-30 , Samit Patel 39 Having already secured major silverware during a remarkable campaign, the Swaine can now add the White Rose Trophy to their collection after overcoming the team that lifted the competition last time around. The History A quirky 2026 has thrown up a rather unusual situation. Traditionally, the champions of the four established ECB Premier Leagues – the NYSD, Bradford Premier League, YCSPL and Yorkshire Premier League North – would meet in a couple of September knock-out games to decide the county’s top club. But Yorkshire now has five ECB Premier Leagues, following the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League’s accreditation for the 2025 season, so there were a few changes to the format which caused a delay. Fast forward to 2026 and the line-up featured Hoylandswaine, making their debut in the competition, alongside holders Richmondshire, New Farnley, Barnard Castle, Castleford and Cleethorpes. And there was a delicious twist - because of the unusual scheduling, Hoylandswaine and Richmondshire were both in with a chance of winning the White Rose Trophy twice in the same season – and potentially doing it within the space of just a few weeks. The Match On a day when the stakes could hardly have been higher, Hoylandswaine produced a superb all-round performance to defend 168 and dismiss Richmondshire for 147-9 from their 30 overs. Richmondshire won the toss and elected to field, but Hoylandswaine's batsmen set about building a competitive total despite losing wickets at regular intervals. A brilliant all-round performance saw Hoylandswaine defeat reigning champions Richmondshire by 21 runs to lift the Yorkshire Premier Leagues White Rose Trophy. The Swaine posted 168 all out, led by Samit Patel's 39, before Adam Sylvester produced a superb 4-30 from nine overs as Richmondshire finished on 147-9. Another trophy. A nine-wicket victory over New Farnley in a rain-interrupted Yorkshire Champions’ White Rose Trophy semi-final last Sunday has earned Swaine a place in next Sunday’s showpiece final, where they will face reigning holders Richmondshire. And while the weather tried its best to put a dampener on proceedings at The Barry Jackson Ground, it could do nothing to stop Hoylandswaine’s march towards Yorkshire glory. Hoy­landswaine won the toss and sent New Farn­ley in, the Brad­ford Premier League cham­pi­ons being restric­ted to 115-8 in their 25 overs, the match being reduced in length due to impend­ing rain. Adnan Ghani (4-31) and Adam Sylvester (2-23) reduced New Farn­ley to 72-6, Samit Patel (2-20) tak­ing the last two wick­ets before Gur­man Rand­hawa (10no) and Reuben Majithia (16no) added 25 unbroken. Swaine set off like a train via Ben Kohler-Cad­more (20 off 10) and Fur­qan Shafiq (34no off 38, includ­ing two fours and two sixes), the dis­missal of Kohler-Cad­more com­ing just before the first rain break. Abid Ali then left the field retired not out 12 with a sus­pec­ted broken thumb, rain end­ing the innings at 75-1 after 10. However, there was no doubt about the result. The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculation left Hoylandswaine 33 runs ahead, confirming a nine-wicket victory and sending them through to the final. Standing between Hoylandswaine and the White Rose Trophy will be Richmondshire, the reigning holders who booked their place in the final by defeating Castleford. However, here we are. The Premiership title has been decided with Hoylandswaine beating all before them and surely, they will be keen to maintain this record to the end. The relegation issue is still wide open although Armitage Bridge totter on the rim of the trap door, whereas Mirfield Parish, Golcar and The Wes battle not to accompany them. The Championship is equally enthralling with Barkisland as good as promoted, returning to the Premiership after only one season. The Conference is once again a puzzle wrapped up in an enigma. Flockton are the latest ex Central League team to make their way into top three sections cricket as they have amassed over one hundred points in the Alliance with Kirkburton second team looking likely to join them. Alliance two sees Shepley seconds likely to go up along with one of either Mirfield Parish seconds or Golcar seconds. Alliance three finds Marsden seconds, like their firsts attempting to get promotion which seems likely alongside one of either Birkby or Lascelles Hall. Finally, Alliance four is a mirror image for Flockton second team with their firsts as they top the table and should be promoted alongside Earnshaw Cup finalists Cartworth Moor Three games left and still lots to sort out. The final was staged at one of the most picturesque venues in the league. Shelley won the toss and elected to bat, posting an imposing 224 for 8 from their 45 overs. After losing Tiger Payne for two, Jake Newman and Ellis Mellor helped steady the Shelley innings before both departed with the score on 49 and 50 respectively. Green was well supported by Daniel Steers, who made 31 while Harry Stubbs finished unbeaten on 39. Cartworth Moor's bowlers battled hard, with Muhammad Mahroof, Shaban Sagheer and Muhammad Asad taking two wickets each. In reply, Cartworth Moor struggled to build momentum. Shabs Hussain top-scored with a quickfire 17 from 13 balls, including two fours and a six, while John Addy made 13. The key figure with the ball was Harry Stubbs, who capped an excellent all-round performance with four wickets for 33 runs from eight overs. Shelley's emphatic victory secured the Earnshaw Cup, bringing a successful conclusion to their cup campaign, while Cartworth Moor were left to reflect on a fine run to the final. At Hoylandswaine, the 2nd XI produced an emphatic six-wicket victory over Skelmanthorpe CC 2nd XI in the Paddock Shield Final, chasing down 221 with almost 15 overs to spare. Skelmanthorpe won the toss and elected to bat at Hoylandswaine’s quirky Haigh Lane ground, posting an on par 220-5 from their 45 overs. S P Singh was the pick of Swaine’s bowlers with 2-49 from his nine overs, whilst Suleman Khan’s 9 overs spell for only 26 runs was crucial in restricting Shat Bangers’ total to well below 250. In reply, the burly Jack Seddon got Swaine off to a flying start when he smashed a brutal 48 from only 21 deliveries, mainly at the expense of Skelmanthorpe’s young bowler Harvey Smither. Iqbal’s commanding and magnificent run-a-ball innings of 102 that included 17 fours and two sixes deservedly earned Asif the Philip Oldfield Man-of-the-Match Award. The dismissal of Iqbal with Swaine’s score on 204-4 only delayed the inevitable with Chavez Younes finishing unbeaten on 35 from 30 balls as the likely Conference Division Champions clinched the historic Shield in the 31st over with only four wickets down. It was an emphatic victory for Hoylandswaine, who wrenched the trophy away from last years winners, with Captain Callum Honeyman holding the Shield aloft for the first time since 2023. Hoylandswaine 165-4 (29 overs): Chris Holliday 37, Furqan Shafiq 40, Samit Patel 51, Adam Sylvester 3-32, Adil Ali 3-41, Max Morley 2-31, Samit Patel 1-22. Hoylandswaine produced a commanding performance at Honley Cricket Club to lift the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League’s historic Sykes Cup sponsored by Pearson Financial Wellbeing, after chasing down Rastrick’s 161 with six wickets and 20 overs to spare. There was early drama when rain swept across the bone dry ground in the hour before the scheduled start. Having won the toss, Hoylandswaine’s Captain Arron Lilley elected to field and his decision was quickly rewarded as Rastrick came under pressure from almost the first ball. Rastrick never recovered from their early set-back and struggled to build sustained partnerships, although Shrikant Wagh provided the innings with some much-needed momentum. Wasim Javed remained unbeaten on 20 from 31 balls as Rastrick were eventually bowled out for 161 in 43. Welshman Sylvester went on to finish with an excellent 3-32 from 9 overs, while spinners Adil Ali and Max Morley also played major roles, picking up three and two wickets respectively. In contrast to Rastrick Hoylandswaine’s reply was built around a solid opening partnership of 77 between Chris Holliday and Furqan Shafiq, with Holliday first out on 37 from 45 balls and Shafiq falling shortly afterwards on 40 from 47. However Hoylandswaine remained firmly in control with the arrival of Samit Patel at the crease who, with 51 runs off on 41 balls placed victory firmly in Swaine’s hands. Patel eventually fell with the scores level on 161, but by then the job was virtually complete. The result was a six-wicket win in what proved to be an easier victory than the tighter contest the same two teams fought out in the league match played the day before. The victory brought the curtain down on a memorable occasion for the Huddersfield Premier Cricket League, played in front of a superb crowd despite the early weather scare. Gurman Randhawa 87, Adam Ahmed 59 New Farnley won by 34 runs Hoylandswaine’s hopes of reaching the Heavy Woollen Cup final came to an end at the Barry Jackson Ground on Sunday as New Farnley secured a 34-run victory in a hard-fought semi-final. Having won the toss, Hoylandswaine elected to field and made an excellent start, with Adam Sylvester producing a superb opening spell. However, Gurman Randhawa and Adam Ahmed then produced a crucial recovery. There was an interesting Huddersfield Cricket League connection to New Farnley’s recovery, with Randhawa having started his junior cricket in Huddersfield with the Wesleyans, and then, whilst still an Under-15 player, he was already playing in Lascelles Hall’s first team, primarily as a batsman. Hoylandswaine began the reply positively, reaching 50 inside five overs, with Furqan Shafiq leading the early charge. After Shafiq departed, Samit Patel and Adnan Mufti rebuilt the innings with a valuable fourth-wicket partnership. At 150-4, Hoylandswaine were still in contention, and when they reached 200 in the 37th over the game remained alive. Arron Lilley kept the chase moving with an aggressive 42 from 44 balls, including four fours and a six, but regular wickets eventually put the target beyond reach. Huddersfield's bowlers Connor Parr (Armitage Bridge) and Max Turner (Golcar) made early in-roads removing Garett and Matthew Weston, leaving the MCC struggling at 12-2 after three overs. Opener Perry started locating the Highfield Lane boundary and was well-supported by Huddersfield based Tom Addy. Perry continued forming solid partnerships adding 58 with Schofield and 45 with Marshall. The MCC lower-order took advantage of the Huddersfield spin bowlers - Marshall finishing with 46 from 38 balls - including four sixes. Barkisland's Milton Greenwood finished with 3-50 from 6. Huddersfield's reply got off to the worst possible start with MCC skipper Harry Moore (Honley) being caught behind to the first ball of the innings from Porter. Wickets continued to fall - Bode Ratcliffe (Slaithwaite) for no score, Lewis Senior (Cumberworth United) for 18 and Greenwood for 2. Playing two demanding matches at Wollaton Village Sports Association in Nottingham, Rastrick first edged past Cleethorpes by a single run before returning to the field later in the day and defeating hosts Wollaton by six runs. Rastrick edge out Cleethorpes in a thriller Batting first, Rastrick found themselves in early trouble at 42 for three, but overseas allrounder Aubrey Swanepoel steadied the innings with an important 41 from 35 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Jacob Waterson then guided Rastrick through the closing overs, finishing unbeaten on 26 from 21 balls, while Shrikant Wagh provided a late flourish with 16 not out from just nine deliveries. Rastrick closed on 137 for six, leaving Cleethorpes a challenging target. The bowling attack responded brilliantly. Cleethorpes captain Ian Mansfield fought a lone battle with 51, supported by David Mansfield's 39 from 30 balls, but Rastrick continued to take wickets at crucial moments. Needing 12 from the final over, Cleethorpes pushed Rastrick to the limit but eventually finished on 136 for seven – just one run short. Swanepoel leads the charge against Wollaton There was little time to celebrate before Rastrick returned to the field to face hosts Wollaton. After losing Moaaz Ajaz for two, Shoukat Ali and Swanepoel launched a superb recovery. The all-rounder smashed 75 from just 41 deliveries, including 12 fours and a six, putting the Wollaton attack under relentless pressure. Fahid Rehman added a quick 17 before Wagh once again provided a spectacular finish, blasting 34 from only 17 balls, including four sixes. Rastrick posted an imposing 191 for seven. Wollaton refused to surrender, with Nicky Kirkwood hitting an excellent 64 from 35 balls and Hamish Llewelyn contributing 44 from 33. But Rastrick's bowlers once again held their nerve. Defending 164, Rastrick held their nerve in a tense finish as Scholes closed on 162-4, with Wasim Javed producing an outstanding spell under intense pressure to earn the Man of the Match award. Earlier, Rastrick recovered from losing early wickets thanks to an excellent innings from Shoukat Ali, whose 68 from 46 balls, featuring nine fours and two sixes, provided the backbone of the innings. Scholes' attack was led by Louis Brook, who claimed 3-25 from his four overs, while Yaasar Imtiaz and Jake Lockwood each picked up a wicket. Scholes looked well placed for victory during much of the chase as George Barden compiled a composed 57 from 48 balls and Bradley Birkhead added a fluent 51 from 38, the pair putting them firmly in control. However, the momentum swung back in Rastrick's favour when Istikhar Hussain struck three times, finishing with impressive figures of 3-28 to remove Barden, Paul Nasser and Benji Birkhead at crucial stages. In reply, Linthwaite were bowled out for 108, with Lascelles Hall's bowlers maintaining control throughout the innings. The Man of the Match was all-rounder Sheheryan Hassan, whose outstanding contribution with both bat and ball proved decisive. For Linthwaite, Mohammad Hassan was the pick of the bowlers with 3-20 from four overs, while Anees Hussain top-scored with 27, but the visitors were unable to build the partnerships needed to challenge Lascelles Hall's total.
