Matchday 26 Review: Hussain Fifty In Vain For Birkby

9 Sep 2017

Featured Image: Altaf Hussain's (Birkby Rose Hill) half century was ultimately academic as the only match to beat the vicious weather on the final day ended in defeat for Birkby. Hussain finished with 53 as Emley Clarence ran out comfortable winners with a half centurian of their own in Shannon Clarke (54).

A final day festooned with monsoons incredibly resulted in only one match seeing play as the whole cricket programme was virtually washed out which meant heartbreak for Rastrick and elation for both Shelley and Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Drakes Premiership

No matches saw play with nothing at stake with Champions Hoylandswaine presented with the Byrom Shield at their scheduled match away at Kirkburton.

Jedi Championship

Again, a full fixture washout but Shelley secured the title with second placed Mirfield Parish Cavaliers joining them in promotion to the Premiership at the first attempt. At the end of a long, hard season, Rastrick paid the ultimate price for taking their eye off the ball at the most crucial of times in the last two weeks as they finished in third place. No places were at stake in the relegation zone as Linthwaite and Kirkheaton were both already down before the day's schedule.

Cedar Court Conference

Miraculously, one match beat the relentless bad weather and it was at Emley Clarance as the home side finished on a high note by defeating Birkby Rose Hill. Emley laboured their way to 168ao with overseas player Shannon Clarke (54) scoring a half-ton under consistent bowling pressure by Awan (4-55) and Mushtaq Hussain (4-33). Birkby Found things difficult themselves in the reply with only Altaf Hussain (53) resisting the Emley onslaught. Clarke (3-29) completed a super performance along with Mohammed Nabeel (3-33) and Birkby were all out for 117. The win took Emley up a place to 8th and Birkby dropped a place to second-bottom in the final table. Promotion places were already decided the previous week where Champions elect Lepton Highlanders along Almondbury will play Championship cricket in 2018.
