Steve ‘Cobber’ Whitwam – A True Legend of Huddersfield Cricket

Steve ‘Cobber’ Whitwam is undoubtedly one of the most respected cricketers still playing at the highest level in the Huddersfield Cricket League. Now well into his forties, Steve’s passion, commitment and outstanding contribution to the game have spanned more than 30 years, making him a true legend of local cricket.

The majority of Steve’s career has been spent at Golcar Cricket Club, with just a four-year spell at Scholes interrupting his long-standing association with the club. His record on the field speaks for itself. Steve holds the Huddersfield Cricket League record for the most runs scored, with an incredible tally of over 24,000 runs and 43 first-team centuries. Add to that more than 1,000 wickets and a remarkable ten wins of the prestigious Jack Gledhill Award, and his achievements are quite simply exceptional.

However, Steve’s contribution goes far beyond the statistics. Despite receiving consistent offers to play elsewhere, he has remained fiercely loyal to Golcar CC and the Huddersfield Cricket League. His commitment and influence have been instrumental in helping Golcar maintain its position as a Premier League club, and his presence continues to be invaluable both on and off the field.

Steve’s dedication to Golcar extends well beyond his performances with bat and ball. He has given countless hours to the club as a member of the main committee, the team selection committee and as a club trustee. Having previously captained the first team for a number of years, he now serves as vice-captain, continuing to lead by example and share his experience with those around him.

Beyond his club commitments, Steve also plays an important role in promoting the wider game as co-host of the Huddersfield Cricket League’s Castle Hill Cricket Chat podcast series, alongside programme anchor Andrew Crawshaw.

Few players can match Steve’s combination of longevity, achievement, loyalty and service. His extraordinary record, unwavering commitment to Golcar and continued enthusiasm for the game make him far more than an outstanding cricketer. He is an ambassador for local cricket, a cornerstone of his club and an inspiration to the generations of players who have played alongside him.

Steve ‘Cobber’ Whitwam is the very embodiment of what it means to be a club cricketer, and his contribution to Golcar Cricket Club and the Huddersfield Cricket League deserves to be recognised and celebrated.
