JOHNNY HUNTER ROSE BOWL APPLICATION – 1st XI
ABBAS KHAN – MARSDEN CC
SHELLEY v MARSDEN – CHAMPIONSHIP, 12 SEPTEMBER 2026
This was a crucial fixture for Marsden, who were sitting second in the Championship behind division champions Barkisland, with third-placed Thongsbridge just one point behind. With promotion to the 2027 Premiership at stake, Marsden knew that victory was vital.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Marsden bowled Shelley out for a modest 114 in 34 overs. It was a total they would have fancied their chances of chasing down. However, the innings got off to a disastrous start, with Marsden reduced to 18-3 before Abbas Khan came to the crease, with 97 runs still required for victory.
What followed was a superb display of batting under pressure. Combining patience and positivity, Abbas steadily chipped away at the target, keeping Marsden in the contest while wickets continued to fall around him. He showed great composure and determination, refusing to let the mounting pressure affect his approach.
With the scores tantalisingly close, the ninth wicket fell at 112, leaving Marsden needing just three runs to win. Abbas faced the first ball of the next over and, with remarkable confidence, launched it over cover for six, sealing a memorable victory for Marsden.
His unbeaten 58 from just 55 balls had turned a precarious position into a match-winning performance, securing Marsden's promotion to the Premiership for the first time since 2013.
In a game where the stakes could hardly have been higher, Abbas Khan delivered when his team needed him most. His combination of resilience, intelligent batting and the confidence to finish the match in spectacular fashion makes this a thoroughly deserving nomination for the Johnny Hunter Rose Bowl.
