Remembering Mel Briggs

12 Jan 2026

The Leage are sad to hear that Mel Briggs, a much‑loved and long‑serving member of Shepley Cricket Club, sadly passed away on 24 December. His contribution to the club and the community leaves a legacy that will be remembered for many years

Shepley Cricket Club is deeply saddened to share the news of Mel’s passing. Mel had been unwell for some time, and we take comfort in knowing he spent his final days peacefully at home with his family.

Mel was a highly respected Club Secretary and a central figure in the club’s major fundraiser throughout the 1990s: the annual 'Gentleman’s Sporting Evening' at the Huddersfield Masonic on Greenhead Road. His organisation, enthusiasm, and commitment were key to its success, and many will remember those evenings as highlights of the club’s calendar.

When his beloved wife Sue suffered a serious stroke, Mel stepped away from committee duties to care for her full‑time. Even during those years, his affection for Shepley CC never faded. After Sue’s passing, he returned as a loyal supporter, always ready to help wherever he could.

In more recent times, Mel found great joy in attending Friday junior practice nights. He believed passionately that the junior section represented the future of the club, and he loved seeing so many young players enjoying their cricket under the guidance of our dedicated coaches.

One of our favourite photographs shows Mel in the old clubhouse — and unusually, on the wrong side of the bar. It captures his warmth, humour, and long-standing connection to Shepley CC.

Mel will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
