Teenager Oakley’s Five not enough for Denby  - Lower League Bowling Report

Teenager Oakley’s Five not enough for Denby  - Lower League Bowling Report

15 May 2024

Fourteen year old Oakley Hargreaves created a stir at Denby 2XI by collecting 5-30 in a fruitless afternoon to make the pick of the bowling feats in the lower divisions. Here’s a roundup of the action.

Conference

Spearheading victories for their teams were Jordan Thackray (Thurstonland CC) and George Smith (Cumberworth United CC) who ripped through the opposition batting line-ups. Thackray scattered Clayton West's batsmen with a brilliant 5-31 haul, while Smith dismantled Kirkheaton's order with a decisive 5-33 performance.

Alliance

The lower divisions weren't exempt from the bowling brilliance. Andrew Martin (Golcar) unleashed a destructive spell on Barkisland's batting, taking an impressive 5-24. David Wagstaff, captain at Thongsbridge 2XI, followed suit by taking five wickets for just 29 runs against the Almondbury first team.

Experience also played its part. Veteran Henry Frankland (Upperthong 1XI) shone with a tight 4-15 spell in their victory at home to Honley 2XI.

Youthful exuberance was also on display in the other matches. Jack Wilson (Scholes) and Jake Hewitt (Moorlands) played crucial roles in their respective teams' victories with impressive four-wicket hauls. Moorlands continued their bowling dominance with Braiden Fortis adding another four-wicket performance to their tally.

Alliance Two & Three

Evan Berry (Slaithwaite) and Muhammad Jawad (Birkby Rose Hill) impressed in Alliance Two with well-deserved four-wicket hauls.

In Alliance Three, Iryn Singh (Edgerton & Dalton) and Boris Thomson (Holmbridge) emerged as the bowling heroes, leading their attacks to victory with magnificent five-wicket hauls.

Anwar Umar (Flockton) spearheaded their win with a dazzling 5-4 bowling display against Marsden, a match where the evergreen Carl Zaffino (Marsden) rolled back the years with a 4-14 haul despite his team's loss. The plaudits for taking wickets were shared across other games, with George Haigh (Clayton West), Aidan Geldart (Denby Dale), and Alex Moors (Emley Clarence) all chipping in with crucial five-wicket hauls.

Alliance Four

Even at a young age, both 14-year-old Oakley Hargreaves-Hunt (Denby) and 17-year-old Jeanie Lee (Emley Clarence) showcased their talent with impressive bowling displays. Oakley’s 5-30 was not enough at Edgerton & Dalton but Jeanie could celebrate success as Emley Clarence 2XI eased home away at league new boys Denby Grange 2XI.
