Is is with regret that we report the sad death of Huddersfield League Umpires Association official Steve Ashwell. Steve passed away at Halifax General hospital yesterday having lost his battle with COVID-19. He was 66 years old.
Steve was one of the most well known umpires on our circuit, famous for his laughing, joking, scowling, finger pointing, Town supporting, chatty, and enthusiastic personality. He was dedicated to local cricket and umpiring.
Steve was from Bradley and originally a bowler at Bradley and Colne CC before going into umpiring, including being Club Umpire at the Wesleyans, and over the last many years on the HCL UA panel. He has been umpiring for over 25 years.
The Huddersfield Cricket League extend our sympathy and condolences to his family and friends in the cricket community and elsewhere.
Those clubs who have been closely associated with Steve over the years may, as a mark of respect, wish to acknowledge his passing with a moments silence at matches taking place this coming weekend. Both the UA and the League are pleased to support this.
