We're well into November and the 2012 season is still quite far away, so here's a recommendation about a superb book should you be missing your local cricket 'fix' through the winter.
'It's Not Lords' is a superbly-written anthology containing lots of excellent local anecdotes, stories and articles on local cricket, penned by local historians and former Huddersfield University students. With a foreward by Gideon Haigh, this fine companion piece is priced just £7.50 plus a small fee for postage and packaging. It would make a fine gift or stocking filler for someone this Christmas, or you could buy it just for yourself!
For those wanting a copy, contact Dave Walker from Shallily Books on 01484 683196 or via post at Shallily Books, The Pavilion, 30 Victoria Springs, Holmfirth, HD9 2NB. Dave can also be emailed at shalliley@btinternet.com.

Speakers are to include acclaimed after-dinner speaker Alan Stuttard, Central Lancashire League aficionado Dave Cooper, Hanif Mayet and Farid Karolia from Batley club Mount CC, Todmorden authors Brian, Malcolm and Freda Heywood, Illingworth CC historian Andrew Smith, and cricket website designer Lee Booth.

Honley secured their sixth Byrom Shield championship in seven years yesterday with a hard-earned victory at Slaithwaite in one of the most thrilling final days of a season for a few years. Delph & Dobcross, third before the start of play ensured Honley had to win at Hill Top by taking maximum points at home to Broad Oak, relegating the Linthwaite-based club after three seasons in the top flight. Byrom Shield contenders Kirkburton fell at the final hurdle, although it was academic in the end, by losing at home to Scholes who finished the season with a flourish. There was also high drama at the foot of the table with Marsden, who faced a stern test at Heavy Woollen and Sykes Cup winners Shepley. In a match that went all the distance, Marsden edged home securing five vital points to pull them out of the relegation zone, although Shepley secured a point to give them a treble adding the Hopkinson trophy to their seasons haul. Broad Oak will possibly rue their one run defeat at Scholes the week before as they ended the season level on points with Slaithwaite, but below them by virtue of less six point victories.
In the Frank Platt Championship there was also an exciting conclusion to the season as Meltham, who were second at the start of play, missed out on promotion falling to a 3 run defeat at Emley Clarence. This allowed Hall Bower to leapfrog Meltham with a win at already-relegated Paddock into the all-important 2nd place and promotion to the Premiership joining champions Clayton West who fell to defeat at Holmfirth. This win for Holmfirth secured them safety rendering Almondbury's emphatic victory over Lepton Highlanders in vain as they failed to avoid relegation.

Shepley beat Skelmanthorpe today (Sunday) at a sunny Elland CC to add the Sykes Cup to the Heavy Woollen Cup they recently won. It was not all plain sailing, however, as, after winning the toss and batting, Shepley found scoring not easy. At 99 for 8 after 38 overs Skelmanthorpe must have thought they were going to retain the cup. However, Danny and Craig Glover managed to take the total up to 145 before they were both dismissed in the last over. Danny made 45 and Craig 12 to post a competetive target in what turned out to be a low scoring final. Skelmanthorpe's innings never got going and they were blown away by Craig Glover, who finished with figures of 8 for 26 off12.5 overs. Skelmanthorpe were all out for just 53 off 26 overs.
Unsurprisingly, man of the match adjudicator Craig Macreadie, chairman of Broad Oak CC, named Craig Glover as his man of the match.

The other semi final was unfortunately un-completed, after rain swept in at Delph during the 2nd innings. Delph had posted 176 all out, and with the tie interestingly poised with Golcar on 51 for 4 off 5 overs, the umpires had no alternative but to take the players off, as the rain, which started falling at the start of the innings, increased in severity.

Following recent revelations it would appear that there is some confusion around the Registering of Players 13yo to 15yo. As in previous season any player 16 & 17yo had to be registered if they were to play in the Leagues 1st or 2nd xi matches.
At the AGM in January it was passed by the Council that all players 13years and over had to be registered if they intended to play in 1st or 2nd XI matches. Those players involved could not simply be added to the list of retained players from season 2010, unless they were already registered for that season. All those players now being registered should be submitting a RTDF form as if they were new players for this season. They will then be placed on the Clubs List of registered players with a (j) notation indicating they are an under 17yo.
I, therefore, would ask all clubs to check their registered players list and if necessary submit an RTDF form immediately in order to address this apparent widespread anomaly.

As you may know, inclement weather the country over put paid to any cricket action in yesterdays Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield ties. All scheduled matches have now been rearranged for the carry-over date of Sunday June 19th with the exception of Slathwaite vs Honley (Paddock Shield) which takes place starting tonight (13th June) until a finish.
6th June 2011
An all Huddersfield League semi-final looks to be a distinct possibility following the draw tonight. Shepley, following Sunday's fine victory over Bradford League heavyweights Woodlands were rewarded with a home tie against either fellow Premiership outfit Slaithwaite or Bradford 2nd division side Yeadon depending on the winner of their yet-to-be arranged 3rd round tie. In the Crowther Cup for 2nd XI sides, Kirkburton's reward for knocking out an ever-strong Wrenthorpe side in the 3rd round will entertain Yeadon. The full draws are as follows:
Heavy Woollen Cup Semi Final | Crowther Cup Semi Final |
Gomersal v Hanging Heaton Shepley v Slaithwaite or Yeadon | Methley v Ossett Kirkburton v Yeadon |
2nd June 2011
The draw for both the Oddfellows and Earnshaw were made at the monthly League meeting last night and are as follows:
Oddfellows Cup 2nd Round | Earnshaw Cup 2nd Round |
Kirkheaton v Holmfirth Micklehurst v Linthwaite Clayton West v Rastrick | Cawthorne v Clayton West Shelley v Hoylandswaine Hall Bower v Kirkheaton Linthwaite v Thongsbridge or Paddock |
Ties to be played Sunday 26th June at 1.00pm
Thieves on the prowl for ground equipment
31st May 2011
Blackley CC on the Halifax-Huddersfield boundary have had £5000 worth of equipment stolen in a night-time raid on their tackle shed, a week after a similar raid at Mytholmroyd CC, also of the Halifax League, netted thieves £2000 of tackle.
25th May 2011
The draw for the 3rd round of the Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield was made tonight at Golcar Cricket Club, and as usual it threw up a few intriguing ties. The undoubtable tie of the Sykes Cup quarter final looks certainly to be over at Hoylandswaine, who will entertain fellow Premiership rivals Shepley for a place in the semi-final. Last season's winners Skelmanthorpe will either make a short trip to Clayton West or the longer journey over to Barkisland who were winners in 2008 depending on who goes through from their cancelled 2nd round match. Delph & Dobcross, runners up last season make a trip to either Golcar, who they've faced twice so far this season, or Premiership new boys Shelley in another match that was beaten by the elements last weekend and finally Cawthorne's reward for reaching the last eight in their first season is a home fixture with Marsden. Both draws for the Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield are below:
Sykes Cup 3rd Round Hoylandswaine v Shepley Cawthorne v Marsden | Paddock Shield 3rd Round Kirkburton v Broad Oak Scholes v Hall Bower Slaithwaite or Armitage Bridge v Honley Paddock v Golcar |
24th May 2011
The Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield matches from Sunday 22nd May which were unable to start are now rearranged for Sunday 5th June all starting at 1pm.
Note: Contrary to what has been printed in the Huddersfield Examiner, the ties will be played on the dates above and not on Sunday May 29th 2011.
9th May 2011
Huddersfield League sides enjoyed a bit of good fortune in the draw for the Heavy Woollen Cup tonight, with all three local sides left in the competition being drawn at home. Delph & Dobcross, who overcame Golcar in Sunday's 2nd round match will play host to Bradford League top flight outfit Gomersal who edged out Spen Victoria in a close game. Shepley welcome Bradford League big guns Woodlands who should provide a stiff test given they rolled over Birstall with relative ease. The remaining Huddersfield League side, Slaithwaite will entertain Bradford League Division Two side Yeadon who were recently relegated from their own domestic top flight in 2010. Meanwhile for 2nd XI sides still left in the Crowther Cup, Skelmanthorpe's reward for a terrific victory over a strong Townville side is a trip to Methley and Kirkburton face a daunting trip to Wrenthorpe who have already beaten Delph & Dobcross and Slaithwaite on their way to round three.
The full draw for both cups are as follows:
Heavy Woollen Cup 3rd Round | Crowther Cup 3rd Round |
Hanging Heaton v Morley Delph & Dobcross v Gomersal Shepley v Woodlands Slaithwaite v Yeadon | Methley v Skelmanthorpe Wrenthorpe v Kirkburton Ossett v Barnsley Yeadon v Liversedge |
All ties to be played on Sunday June 3rd 2011.

The draw for the 2nd round of the Sykes Cup and Paddock Shield was made tonight at the monthly league meeting held at Almondbury Cricket Club. A few notable draws has already wet one or two appetites in particularly Scholes making their second journey to Marsh Lane in a matter of weeks to take on Shepley while current holders Skelmanthorpe host in-form Elland who have made a very bright start to the season. There's another all-Premiership clash as Shelley entertain 2009 Sykes Cup winners Golcar while Honley's conquerers and Championship outfit Clayton West were rewarded with another away tie, this time over to Calderdale-based Barkisland who they lost to in the 1st round of the Heavy Woollen Cup recently. The full draws are as follows.

Welcome to the brand new Drakes Huddersfield League Website, which as you can see is well underway, but not yet finished. Here's a rundown of what's to come in the coming weeks and other news:
Archive
I'm currently working on content for the archive area at the moment. In a league which stretches back well over 100 years this is a section which requires plenty of work and input from other people. If you feel you have anything of note which I can use on this section, contact me as I'm sure most of it will come in useful in helping this website become a busy hub for local cricket fans. At the moment, I'll be working on putting tables from the last few years, from what ever information I can gather from league handbooks and suchlike. Keep checking the homepage for news of updates to this area as it happens.
Gallery
I'm relying on input for willing volunteers on this area of the website. To make this an even greater website, and bring in more visitors of course, a good gallery is a big part of it. If you're an amateur photographer and visit many Huddersfield cricket games we'd love to see your action shots. I can credit you in each image and, if required, watermark your images for protection. Please contact me if you can help.
Club Directories
As you can see, the club directories are all complete with links. I still hope to develop this area some more, by adding links to clubs social networking pages and other details which could be added. Should any contact details on the club pages be incorrect, or if you have any suggestions please contact me.
e-newsletter
You may now register to the e-newsletter, which will be sent out periodically with any latest newsbites and upcoming notable dates in your diary. Should you wish to subscribe, click here and enter your email address and name to be added to our list.
To contact me directly, you can email me at jamiekharrison@gmail.com.

Huddersfield clubs had a relatively successful time of things in this season's Heavy Woollen Cup first round, with no fewer than seven clubs (Skelmanthorpe will bid to make it eight following their rearranged game against Morley) all progressing through to give healthy local representation to the 2nd round. However each Huddersfield League club seemed to draw each other for the 2nd round, all of which are played on Sunday 8th May. The full draw for both HWC and Crowther Cup is below:
Heavy Woollen Cup, 2nd Round | Crowther Cup, 2nd Round |
Shelley v Morley or Skelmanthorpe Shepley v Scholes Slaithwaite v Barkisland Birstall v Woodlands Golcar v Delph & Dobcross Yeadon v New Farnley Gomersal v Spen Victoria Townville v Hanging Heaton | Kirkburton v Buttershaw St Paul's Hanging Heaton v Barnsley Methley v Barkisland Skelmanthorpe v Townville Wakefield Thornes v Yeadon Wrenthorpe v Slaithwaite Ossett v Golcar Liversedge v Jer Lane |
