Big Ben To Burton Fundraiser

Big Ben To Burton Fundraiser

3 Apr 2022

A charity fundraiser for a cricketing young dad of two who tragically passed away from Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2019 is reaching its final climax as they aim to complete a walk from London’s Big Ben to Kirkburton.

Ben Jebson, an avid cricketer with Kirkburton, was diagnosed with the disease in 2014, just after his 30th birthday. Ben battled through an exhausting range of treatments and had in fact received an all-clear in May 2016. However his triumph turned to tragedy as a complication from a stem cell transplant resulted in a graft-versus-host disease and he lost his battle at Leeds hospital in August 2019.

A group of Ben's family and mates spawned an idea of a remarkable charity walk from one of the main landmarks of the capital; Big Ben, to his home ground at Riley Lane. The original plan was to do it in 2020 but the Coronavirus pandemic curtailed that prematurely. However the team of ten are planning to begin the walk on April 9th 2022 and are scheduled to reach the finish line at the club’s pavilion on Good Friday (15th April), a day before Kirkburton’s first home match of the new season.

The group will cover some 182 miles over seven days. The remarkable attempt will involve covering up to 30 miles per day and they are inviting as many as possible to walk the final leg of the journey from Mosborough with them on Good Friday which will finish for a celebration at the Junction Inn at Kirkburton.

Just as Importantly they are attempting to fundraise for a cause that was very close to Ben’s heart; a charity that provide essential items and services at St James’s Hospital in Leeds where Ben spent so much of his time receiving care. Hug On A Tray bring in tea, snacks and fund TV services for the Haematology patients and family who visit the Bexley Wing at the hospital. They hope to raise £20,000 and just need a small push to get them over the line.
