Hedley Dawson, Former Secretary Passes Away

25 Apr 2025

The Huddersfield Cricket League is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hedley Dawson, who died over the weekend near Scarborough at the age of 85.

Hedley was a long-serving and much-loved figure within the local cricketing community, both as a player and an administrator. He played the bulk of his cricket at Slaithwaite Cricket Club, turning out as a batsman from the late 1950s through to the late 1980s. His best season came in 1962, when he scored 344 runs at an average of 22.93 — a proud highlight in a career dedicated to the club he loved.

But Hedley's contributions extended far beyond the pitch. After his playing days, he devoted over two decades as a League Secretary, becoming one of the most respected and hardworking figures in the league’s administration. His tireless service earned him the rare honour of being named a Life Member of the Huddersfield Cricket League — a testament to his enduring commitment and influence.

Hedley also helped lay the foundations for one of the league’s most cherished traditions — the sponsorship of individual awards. It was Hedley who first donated a trophy from a serving committee member to be awarded annually to the best Championship 1XI batsman — a prize that continues to be presented to this day.

A true servant of the game and a stalwart of the league, Hedley Dawson’s legacy will be remembered with great respect and affection. The Huddersfield Cricket League extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those at Slaithwaite Cricket Club who knew and admired him.
