In this year’s annual game, a strong MCC team outmuscled a youthful Huddersfield under 21 team, winning by 142 runs.
Winning the toss and batting first the MCC side posted a challenging 246 all out despite the best efforts of some good quality bowling from the Huddersfield youngsters, with the seamers in particular threatening most of the MCC batters - the outside edge of their bats being challenged on many occasions.
The pick of the bowlers was Hashim Wajid (Mirfield Parish Cavaliers), who took 5-48 in 12 overs, and Waqas Khan (Rastrick) whose pace caused problems throughout, with his 3-78 being scant reward for his efforts. The MCC were bowled out at 3:45pm for 246, with the main contribution to their innings being a well-constructed 72 from M. Cartwright. This left the home side with approximately one hour and 30 minutes +20 overs to bat.
After losing the first five wickets for 23 runs there was no way back for the young Huddersfield side, who were ultimately dismissed for 142 inside 26 overs! The shining light of the innings was a high quality 74 from only 67 balls from Thongsbridge’s Nathan Shoultz, who batted beautifully.
Thanks must go to Skelmanthorpe for hosting this year’s annual game against the MCC, with special mention to the ground staff for producing an excellent pitch together with those who helped in any way at all on the day, to produce an excellent lunch and tea.
